About this event

Please join us to hear Jane Vadiveloo speak on this powerful topic at our 2021 Fanny Reading Human Rights Lecture.

Listed among the Westpac Australian Financial Review 100 Women of Influence in 2014, we are thrilled that Jane Vadiveloo is our 2021 Fanny Reading Lecturer. The topic ‘Promise, Hope and Empowerment’ is close to her heart and the amazing work she does as the Founding CEO of Children’s Ground.

Jane has a 20-year history leading reform and services provision with communities experiencing extreme disadvantage and trauma. She has lived in the Northern Territory for 19 years and has over 30 years of connection to the Arrernte people in Central Australia.

Children’s Ground was created as a 25-year approach to ensure that future generations of children are afforded equity, access and justice to determine their futures – to have quality education, health, social and economic opportunities that privilege their first culture within a global context.

Ruth Barson is the MC for our Fanny Reading Lecture. She is a committed human rights lawyer who is passionate about challenging injustice and advocating for equality and fairness.

At the Human Rights Law Centre she leads a team of lawyers and advocates defending the rights of children and adults in prison and working in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations. Prior to working at the Human Rights Law Centre, Ruth spent a number of years working for the Aboriginal Legal Services in Darwin, Alice Springs and in remote Western Australia. She is the grandchild of Holocaust survivors and cares deeply about working collectively to end discrimination.

During the 2021 Fanny Reading Human Rights Lecture Jane and Ruth will discuss topics such as:

  • What makes Children’s Ground unique
  • The strength of community partnerships in empowering First Nations people
  • Generational change to overcome injustice and disadvantage
  • The roles of prevention, early intervention and empowerment
  • Securing fundamental rights for First Nations children, their families + the community
  • The importance of culture and identity as the foundation for health, learning and wellbeing
